When I began to work with computer networks one of the first things I have learned was to know where I can check the duplex and speed settings on each side of a network link. Because one of the most common failures I encountered during my career were duplex and speed mismatches and it was often a strange drawing of a failure. Once I investigated a problem where the network application has a response time of about 5 seconds on a local LAN.  During the analysis I found a high count of CRC failures on a full duplex Fast Ethernet fiber link. So the further investigation figured out that one side was configured with autoneg and the other side of the link was configured with fix 100 Mbit/s full-duplex. The resulting operational state for the link was 100 MBit/s half-duplex on the autoneg side and 100 Mbit/s full-duplex on the fixed side. In this case it was a firmware problem, because the link was a Fast Ethernet fiber link and for that kind of links autoneg is not specified. So what I just want to say with this small story is that I always check the relevant network configuration along the path which is in trouble.
And as I want to do this in this year spring I saw me confronted with a lot of Windows OS devices. That is normally no great problem because you can check the config with a few cli commands for example netsh int tcp show global also you can check the registry settings and so on…

But in this case I encoutered the following main problem:
I had to do the data collection remotely by the customer itsself and he had not enough experience to go deep into the registry. And of course I didn´t want that he has to do screenshotting for two days…

So I began to search more cli commands for example a command which displays me the configured and operational link settings. But I found out that there is no commands which comes with windows. So I looked at the C# .net Framework what is possible there. And yes I found functions which displays a lot of nice interface features. For example, actual link speed or the up /down info. And I found a way to tranlate the human readable name “WLAN Interface” into the internal hash name of the interface. One thing that I always wanted to know by a command.
And as I were programming the stuff I thought the display of the registry would be very nice, too. But only if I do not need extra admin rights to do so. So I investigated the relevant parameters in the registry the phenomen is that they are a combination of three keys. It is, as it is…

And in the end I wanted to collect the output of some standard windows commands:


netstat -e

The most fascinating commad found out during my search of usefull low priviliged commands was the tasklist /v command. I always missed him. Because with this command it is possible to display the Winbdowtitle, the PID Name and the PID ID in one line. This Info can be matched against the output of the netstat -ano command to get the info which process is responsible for the network traffic on a specific socket.

Of course you can assume this goal with netstat -b, but in that case you need admin rights to do so. And this is something that I don´t wanted to need for the tool.
